In many ways books are mirror images of those who write them. The stories they tell expose the essential beliefs, fears, expectations and dreams which have filled, and fill, the writer’s life. From Homer, Shakespeare, and Tolkien, to King, Rowling, and Brown, every word on every page defines a search by the writer to make his vision of reality, which often includes fantasy, surrealism and magic, visible to other people. To like a book, and if not, to agree with what a writer has written, means that the reader has found a compelling likeness in himself to the writer’s vision ─ the reader has made the writer a part of himself through the book.
Shot to Pieces is an invitation to join the NYPD. To see the world through the eyes of police officers on good and bad days.
Though consigned to the market as a work of fiction, there is always truth in fiction, something which makes the truth more bearable. Michael is saying that life, as a whole, is rife with struggle regardless of vocation, and we must do all possible to face our own heartbreaks and injustices with a mind open to bettering ourselves and the world in which we live.
His characters, though they have names different from the ones we would give them, are characters we know. They are drawn from the fabric of our human story, our collective and individual struggle between what we know is right, and doing what is right.
Each of us believes the better person in us should win the day, and Michael has made that better person visible to us through a vividly honest storyline.
Thank you Michael,
A great read…

Shot to Pieces A Novel edition by Michael O'Keefe Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
When I stumbled across Shot to Pieces, the first thing I noticed was the high ratings and glowing reviews other readers had bestowed upon it. Well, in situations like that I have to read it for myself and see if there’s anything to the hype. I’m really glad I did, and I’m happy to report that I found the book as enjoyable as so many others did. It’s a really solid, tightly written story (crime novel, police procedural). The story moves along at a brisk pace, and while I wouldn’t say the writing is flashy or intricate, it wasn’t without some truly beautiful sentences. The author has more than enough chops to lift this offering above your typical crime novel. Shot to Pieces has a lot of heart. I had zero issue getting behind the protagonist, who happens to be deeply flawed in ways a lesser writer would have had great difficulty writing about. The author’s life experience brought an authenticity to the page most crime writers will never have. The dialogue and interaction between characters felt right, with just the right amount of grit. Most importantly, I found it believable. I’ll be on the lookout for future works from this author.
..."we are just the rough men willing to do violence on behalf of those who can’t."
This book had a raw, gritty, no-holds-barred look at one of NYPD's finest — 1st Grade Detective Padraig "Paddy" Joseph Durr. The story moves back and forth between present day (2013 in this book) and Paddy's past, starting in the 1990s (there is a background storyline of one character that takes place in 1973). Eventually, the time frames, as well as the plot and the subplots, blend together effortlessly...
I was immersed in pages that gave an in-depth look into Paddy's early years in the NYPD... I was engrossed from beginning to end by his and Mairead's life story... I was riveted as Paddy and his partners investigated the death in the gang shooting... I was glued to the pages during the relentless hunt for the murderer... There were enough twists and turns to keep me thoroughly entertained and the ending was a surprise...
I found the storyline about PTSD was the most compelling fictional story I have read on the subject. The psychological side was explored in great detail and the story was very moving. The topic was handled with great compassion by an author who obviously understands it. I thought Mr. O'Keffe's description about the NYPD's reaction to not knowing how to deal with men and women who reported having PTSD was believable...
AfterThought Michael O'Keefe is a NYPD veteran of twenty-four years and it shows in his writing. His details are descriptive enough that I can visualize the characters and the city. I had clear pictures in my head as I flew through his first novel (I will be reading any future novels that he writes). Yes, followers, I am a fan and highly recommend SHOT TO PIECES and the author...
